While roaming the Canadian Highlands during the fall of '99, El Pino (lead
singer of Wiseguy) had a taste of the dark & swollen roots of rock
'n roll. Six months later El Pino left Canada and returned to the low
lands, eager to shape these new found influences into something new.
On a guitar he had traded for a six-pack of Molson Canadian and a tank
of propane back in Canada El Pino and his companions wrote a couple of
songs under the raw influence of Americana, Country Noir, Whiskey and
artists like Blue Mountain, Calexico, Buck Owens, Steve Earle and Wilco.
After releasing a limited edition 7” in May 2001 El Pino And The
Volunteers steadily gained momentum in the Rotterdam underground music
scene.
Now time has come for a follow-up:
The Cougar EP, named after the first track on the disc, comes wrapped
in an unique digi-pack and contains 4 songs recorded at Dunant Extraordinaire
(Rotterdam) and Excess Studios (Rotterdam) between December ‘03
and January ’05:
1. Cougar (2.53)
An upbeat country song on deteriorating beauty and late night bars. Features
guitars, bass, drums, piano and mandolin.
2. Road of Recovery (5.46)
A slo-mo desert waltz about gains and losses. Features guitars, bass,
drums and melodica.
3. Sodium Soaked Streets (4.35)
A dark & introspective song with an unexpected finale, written by
Eva-Louise Williams. Features guitars, bass, drums and lap steel.
4. A Cloud And A Face (5.51)
A pure and honest song on deception, lies and theft. Features guitars,
bass, drums, melodica and lap steel.
